The Angle of Ascent hat uses a unique textured motif, inspired by the long stairway leading up the bluffs from Mohegan Beach on Block Island. The changing stitch patterns keep the pattern interesting to knit, and the soft worsted-weight yarn makes the hat both a quick and pleasurable project.

This design was produced in partnership with North Light Fibers of Block Island as part of their Beacon program for independent designers, and I’m grateful for their support. They are moving on to new interests, and kits are no longer available on their site. I will be adding more alternative yarns to this listing soon.

Skills Needed / Notes:
Cast on, join and work in the round, knit, purl, knit through the back loop, change needles between rounds, slip stitches, knit 2 together decrease, and use tapestry needle to close off top of hat.

  • The motif section of the pattern is both charted and written out; the rest is written only.

  • Video demonstration of crossed stitches: Right Twist and Left Twist Stitches

  • Estimated level: Adventurous Beginner - Intermediate.

Finished Dimensions:
17.5” x 7.5” (44.5 x 19 cm), 19.5” x 8.5” (49.5 x 21.5 cm), and 21.75” x 9.75” (55.25 X 24.75 cm), after blocking (lightly stretched). Intended to be worn with up to 2” (5 cm) negative ease.

Yarn:
North Light Fibers’ Atlantic (100% Falkland Islands Merino, approx. 2.5 oz / 175 yards {approx. 70.8 gr / 155 meters}), one skein. Information about more alternative yarns will be added soon. Some Atlantic yarn may still be available from Wool & Grace.

Tan sample shown in Sand; grey sample shown in Striper.

Yardage Estimates

Smallest size: approx. 105 yds/96 m; middle size: approx. 135 yds/124 m; largest size: approx. 170 yds/155 m.

Needles and Notions:
Circular knitting needles US sizes 3 (3.25 mm) and 5 (3.75 mm), 16” long, or sizes to obtain given gauge.
Preferred needle(s) for small-circumference knitting in the round, US size 5 (3.75mmm), or size to obtain gauge.
Stitch markers.
Tapestry needle.

Gauge:
Over texture pattern, knit in the round with US size 5 circular needle: 22 stitches and 33 rounds = 4”, after blocking, lightly stretched. Please take time to save time and check your gauge. Note - This is a tighter gauge than usual for this yarn, to create a denser fabric and more stitch definition.

This pattern has been professionally tech edited, and all sizes tested. However, humans were involved, and an error still might have slipped by us. If you should find one, please let me know.
