Avalanche
A GIANT MARLED BLANKET
Avalanche is one of a trio of projects from the book Strand that use many, many strands of yarn held together and are worked in simple Seed Stitch. With these patterns, you’ll be worrying less about getting gauge, and paying more attention to the fabric you’re creating. If you like the fabric, you can always add or remove stitches to get the size you want. Your fabric can be as dense or loose as you want depending on how you want it to drape. Is it not turning out quite how you wanted? That’s okay! Usually it takes a few tries to get the right colour/yarn combos, so don’t get discouraged! The great thing about these projects is you’ll be able to tell pretty quickly whether something is working or not and you don’t have to feel bad about ripping back hours and hours of work.
For these projects, we started with one or two strands of Super Bulky “base yarn” and added on from there to create the desired effect. While we’ve listed all the yarns we used in our samples for each pattern, remember that these patterns are all about experimenting, so don’t feel confined by what we’ve chosen. These projects are your ultimate knitting playground, so enjoy, experiment and get creative.
Avalanche is a pattern from the book Strand, which focuses on creating unique fabrics by combining multiple strands of yarn. This PDF also includes a Yarn Weight Combination Guide so you can put together your own yarns with ease, Tips for Using Multiple Yarns so you don’t end up with a tangled mess, as well as instructions to make the Boulder and Glacier Cowls, which use the same principals as this blanket . This project, and many of the other projects from Strand, are perfect for learning, experimenting and creating unique pieces you can knit again and again.
