Pattern Description from Vogue Knitting, Holiday 2009: “FIn part two of this three-part series of hat designs from Elizabeth Zimmermann, her daughter (me, Meg) and her grandson Cully, it’s my turn to share a warm, woolly cap suitable fro northern climes. I knitted the prototype of this design so long ago that I have forgotten the inspiration for the concept. When I showed it to Cully, he made an excellent suggestion: Kit it with interchangeable belts. Indeed. The original version (with stationary belt) was knitted in ‘Sheepsdown,’ which now comes from the mill a bit thicker than it did nearly thirty years ago, so my relaxed gauge of 2⅓ sts to 1”/2.5cm may be a bit firmer in today’s slightly heavier wool. The new model with variable belts was knitted in 4-ply ‘Un-Spun Icelandic’ wool, so I will give you stats for that version.”

Size: 20”/51cm around, 9”/23cm tall from top to bottom

Materials:

  • One wheel each of three colors of ‘Un-Spun Icelandic’ from Schoolhouse Press. (More colors for different belts - or go to your stash.)
  • Two 24”/60cm circular needles of a size to produce wanted gauge (I used a 10½/6.5mm)
  • Giant button(s)

Gauge: 2.4 sts to 1”/2.5cm

Pattern uses one wheel each of three colors of indicated yarn.
