Depending on the yarn you choose, the afghan can change sizes. A worsted would give you size given in the pattern, but a DK weight can also be used. I always recommend a washable yarn for a child’s project. Cascade 220 washable wool, Rowan worsted washable wool, or acrylic yarns are all good choices.

Unlike a garment, the afghan doesn’t have to fit but getting a gauge with the yarn you pick can help you determine an approximate size. Be sure you purchase enough yarn for the background. One skein of the colors you choose will be more than enough for the motifs.
