Mary Shelley
Why Mary? Because she was a brave and unique woman, different to young ladies of her time - free spirited, creative, a passionate reader, and much influenced by her mother Mary Wollstonecraft’s writings about women’s rights. During a story weekend at Lord Byron’s a writing contest was proposed, and she conceived a story about the misuse of science and the consequences of the lack of love and the acceptance of appearances. Frankenstein was unlike anything written before and is considered an early example of science fiction.
