This lace scarf, with matching lace tails, uses the neckline ribbing characteristic of the scarves of the Seamen’s Church Institute of New York and New Jersey. The scarf begins with JMCO. Half of the stitches are used for working the neckline ribbing and proceeding on to knitting one lace tail. The other half of the stitches are worked in the opposite direction for the other lace tail.

The scarf is named in honor of Monica Kullarand, a wonderful Estonian lace knitter. Monica and her son graciously hosted my husband and me on a wonderful visit to the Haapsalu Ratiku Museum in Estonia. The lace pattern stitch of this scarf is based on Tornikiri, from “The Haapsalu Shawl: A Knitted Lace Tradition from Estonia” by Siiri Reimann and Aime Edasi.
