Inspired by the stunning mustard coloured cape/cloak worn by Claire in Season 2, Episode 3 and named for the hospital she visits, this design is a lace capelet that can be worn tied with ribbons or using a pretty closure.

The lace patterns were selected based on the lace on the front of Annalise’s gown, worn at Versailles.

For a younger look that pays homage to kilts and aprons, the capelet can be worn over a short (or long) skirt, knee high boots, and fastened with JUL toggle closure.

Knit top down, the design begins with a stable edging of linen stitch and the linen stitch continues down the sides for a smooth edging. The shape is created using Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Pi Shawl shaping between the lace patterns.

Substitution Note: Look for a DK weight chained or constructed, non-superwash yarn with lots of loft made with merino (with similar weight to length ratio). To have a similar look, select a heathered or tonal yarn to achieve a similar depth and stitch definition.

Construction Overview/Note on working with this yarn:
Lana Grossa “A.M. Cashmere 16 Fine” is a beautiful constructed, chained yarn with a very high amount of stretch. Be careful how you hold and tension this yarn when knitting to avoid over tensioning or stretching out the yarn, which will result in significant differences in gauge throughout the project. 2-5% of the size may be lost after blocking due to the bounce in this yarn. If using this yarn for your project, block 2.5/1” more in each direction to account for this bounce-back and to ensure the lace pattern displays well.

Tips for adjusting size:
To adjust for width (i.e. larger bust sizes than given): Add stitches in multiples of 10 stitches. Each extra set of stitches will add 2.5 cm/1” in width.

To adjust for length: Add repeats of rows 5 to 24 of chart C. Each repeat will add a little more than 5 cm/2” in length.

Size Information: XS/S (M/L, 1X/2X, 3X)

To fit bust up to: 86.5 (107, 127, 137) cm/34 (42, 50, 54)”

Finished Measurements:
Width: 119.5 (130, 140, 147.5) cm/47 (51, 55, 58)”
Length: 48.25 cm/19”

Choose the size closest to your actual upper bust measurements. Capelet should be worn with several inches of ease.

ERRATA:

  1. There is a missing instruction on page 84 in the Initial Edging. The instruction “Work these 2 rows 7 more times, then work Row 1 once more” should be prefaced with “For Sizes XS/S and M/L:

The missing line should read:

For Sizes XL/2XL and 3X: Work rows 1 & 2 8 more times for a total of 9 times (18 rows).

  1. The glossary does not include the description for the abbreviation ssp-tbl-pnso which is a double decreased used on the WS in Charts A and C.

The purpose of this WS version ssp-tbl-pnso is for the resulting double decrease to look like the RS version which is s1, k2tog, psso.

To mirror that on the wrong side, you need to do the following:

Sl1 stitch as if 2 knit, sl1 stitch as if 2 knit, then purl both stitches together through the back of the loop. (This is the equivalent of the k2tog) Pass the resulting stitch back to the left needle and pass the next stitch over. (This is the equivalent of the sl1 and then later psso). Slip the resulting stich back to the right needle.
