The inspiration for this juvenile chemo cap is a beautiful little girl named Sicily Evelyn Zeka. Sicily was an extremely vibrant, happy, “sunny” child. Her favorite song was “Pocketful of Sunshine”, and that title naturally and quickly evolved into “Pocketful of Sicily”.

Sicily was three years old and had a thick head of long, dark brown hair when she was diagnosed with cancer in August of 2008. She found that there were many advantages to being bald, but she also liked to wear hats -- especially hats with yarn hair.

Because of this one little girl, knitters and crocheters in several states have been making juvenile chemo caps to be distributed to young cancer patients in children’s hospitals in several U.S. states. Many of those crafters have been sharing patterns and yarn recommendations and have collectively agreed that a “clearinghouse” of this information could be beneficial to young cancer warriers and their families, as well as to the crafters themselves, throughout this country and the rest of our world. Proceeds from the sale of this and other “The Sicily Line” patterns will be used to finance the maintenance of that website.

Sicily earned her angel wings on March 21, 2010, and is in a great position to oversee our efforts to distribute juvenile chemo caps in her name.
