These unisex socks use a simple knit and purl pattern to create the effect of swirling lines and break up the pooling that sometimes occurs with hand-dyed yarn. Wear them swirling toward each other or away from each other, depending on your mood (and your attention span when getting dressed).

The sample shown in the photos used one skein of sock yarn; it was knit following the directions for the smallest size, and the foot measures 9.5 in./24 cm long. Your actual yarn use will depend on the width and length of your foot. Be sure you have enough yarn to complete your project. If you’re using the recommended yarn, you may need to purchase two skeins if you’re making one of the larger sizes and/or have a long foot.

To knit this pattern, you need to know how to:

  • knit and purl,
  • work in the round,
  • do basic decreases (k2tog and ssk), and
  • graft live stitches using Kitchener stitch.
