The 3D stitch pattern is similar to the one I used in the Photography Shawl, however knitting this one is easier. The shawl is worked sideways in one piece. Both ends of the shawl have narrow tips, so you cast on a few stitches and bind off just one stitch.

The pattern is one of 5+1 patterns from the Friendship e-book.

I used Echoview Fiber Mill Ranger DK and I highly recommend it for this shawl. The size of the shawl can be customized according to included instructions. While DK weight yarn is used for the sample shawl, you could also use heavier yarn for even more dramatic effect. Some test knitters used fingering weight and one said that “a thicker yarn would hold the 3D structure better”. A test knitter who worked from sport weight, loved the shawl. It is important to choose yarn that holds blocking well. Yarns that drape well (e.g. silk, alpaca) are less suitable for this shawl.

Make sure you read blocking instructions to preserve the 3D structure of the the shawl. Or choose not to block it immediately after knitting (wash yarn in advance if needed).

The shawl is reversible, but right side and wrong side are indicated for ease of pattern writing and reading.

For information about sizes, measurements and yarn requirements please check the second page of the pattern located among the photos on the left.

I asked test knitters what they would like to tell about the pattern and the finished shawl to other knitters and here are some of their answers:

MadeleineL I love this shawl. I knit the smaller size in DK which I think is perfect! The 3-dimensional aspect is interesting and the shape is easy to wear. It’s also reversible! You can wear it as a shawl, scarf, or cowl if wrapped around the neck. Solid or tonal colors would be best to see the 3-D effect.

MandyzMoon The structure of the fabric is unique and makes for a warm fabric.

ftmhling If you are looking a simple unusual pattern for yr advent calendar minis. This is your choice :)

DerRoteFaden Knitting of the unconditionally shawl was great fun. The pattern is easy to memorize and to get in the flow. The instructions are very clear and concise. Therefore, the pattern can be recommended for beginners. However, also for more advanced knitters it is not boring to knit.
I was completely fascinated by knitting a 3D fabric. The completed shawl is really beautiful.

ToniKnit This project has all the elements of a relaxing but interesting knit. There is enough going on to keep you invested in your knitting but not so much that you can’t enjoy yourself with your friends while you’re making it, after all that’s what it’s about isn’t it. Spending time doing what we love with people we love is what makes our hearts happy and our souls whole. A joy to knit.
