#10 Welted Coat
Project Runway champ Irina Shabayeva’s signature look combines outsized theatricality and breezy wearability. Exhibit A: this singular welted coat, knit in Rowan/Westminster Fibers’ Big Wool with a strand of Kidsilk Aura supplying extra contrast. The multidirectional wave effect, which echoes the flight motif, is achieved via short rows and strategic increases within the patterning.
Yardage requirement listed above includes Rowan Big Wool plus Rowan Kid Silk Aura.
From Vogue Knitting, Fall 2010: “Oversized welted ridge coat worked in multiple directions using short row wrapping. Designed by Irina Shabayeva. Sized for one size fits all and shown on page 81.”
NOTES
1) The “welts” referred to in the instructions are the raised St st segments that show on the RS of the fabric and are worked with 1 strand of Rowan Big Wool and Rowan Kidsilk Aura held tog. The recessed segments are the plain St st sections that are worked in Rowan Big Wool only.
2) Make the collar first to best determine the ridge pat gauge. The outer, or “fanned out” segment of the collar, unstretched, reflects the st and row gauge.
