1859 Florence's Third Edging
This tailored edging appeared in The Ladies’ Handbook of Fancy and Ornamental Work by Florence Hartley in 1859. I rewrote the instructions in current U.S. knitting terms. There are only 4 pattern rows and 11 to 12 stitches per row. This straight edging works up quickly and is easily memorized!
Skills needed: long tail cast-on, knit, purl, slip, slip1-slip1-knit-together (SSK), yarn over, yarn over twice, bind-off.
9 sts/inch and 13 rows/inch with #10 crochet thread and #2 needles in the blocked edging pattern
Gauge is not important. Any block-able thread/yarn and any size needles will work. Make a swatch to check the look and width of your edging.
2 yards of #10 crochet cotton will make about 9 rows or 0.75” of edging in the above gauge.
