This cuff pattern from Weldon’s Practical Needlework, Volume 5 circa 1893 was meant for Victorian women or men. Victorians were smaller than we are now, so I increased the cuff to 5” wide by 4” long before seaming to fit today’s average-height woman. I also used U.S. #1 needles instead of the original U.S.#00 (U.K. #15). The cuffs can be knitted flat or in the round. If you work this cuff in the round, eliminate the 2 selvage stitches.
Both the rib and banister patterns are multiples of 5. There are only 4 banister pattern rows and it’s all knit and purl stitches. Barbara G. Walker has a 6-row version of it called Triangular Stitch in her first Treasury of Knitting Patterns. Feel free to increase or decrease the cuff diameter in multiples of 5 and/or change the length to fit.
Skills needed: e-wrap or any stretchy cast-on, knit, purl, slip, and bind off in any stretchy bind-off. “Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-off” is very simple and there are free online videos of her technique.

Any yarn/thread with some stretch and any needle size that meets gauge will work. Make a swatch to check size and appearance.
