When asked to design a mini skein shawl for the Toad Hollow ladies, I knew it would be fun and challenging. With 24 minis to use, making a striped design seemed a great plan but how to keep it cohesive becomes part of a designer’s creative process. But it can’t be too crazy with all those different mini colors screaming to be the star of the show.

I like symmetry so no wacky or wild side steps here. Just a little bit of fun on an edge stitch you may not have knit before. And several wearing options with two I-cords which are woven in and out from bottom to top and cinched a little (or a lot) and tied to make for easy wearing at the elbow or to hold the shawl in place as you go about your day. Maybe a simple aesthetic to show off all the color? … well, here you go, easy peasy, colorful knitting in two sample palettes that will shine no matter how you mix it up. Go for the utterly scrappy version and use every color in the rainbow; use gradient mini packs OR just skeins of sock yarn from your stash in a palette you love to wear.

PATTERN NOTES:
This shawl can be worn many ways: as a shawl or wrap over the shoulders with an I-cord tie, or as a scarf or a cowl tied together in the front. This shawl is worked flat from one end toward the middle. All sections are repeated from the opposite end and are grafted together with a new to me grafting technique you might like to try. The first sections of the shawl are knit on the bias, so they’ll drape beautifully with a tiny little ruffle at the bottom.

SAMPLE 1, Very Scrappy, was knit using the 2019 Advent minis in Toad Hollow superwash Merino (80% superwash merino, 20% Nylon, 82 yards/75 meters, 20 grams) and used 1,455 yards. These minis are no longer available.

SAMPLE 2, Gradient Stripes, was knit using 5 mini gradient sets from Knit Picks Stroll Tonal 5 Mini Pack – Radiant Reds (75% superwash Merino Wool, 25% Nylon, 460 yards/421 m per 100 grams or 92 yards/84 meters, 20 grams) and used 1,308 yards.

GAUGE: 24 sts and 28 rows per 4”/10cm (6 sts and 7 rows per 1”/2.5 cm) in Stockinette Stitch. Blocked and stretch slightly

NOTE: While exact gauge is not critical for the success of this project, a difference in gauge will affect the amount of yarn required.
