The forest is changing as winter makes it’s mark. The trees, only a short time ago so full of life, stand skeletal and frozen. Their once vibrant leaves turned brown, lay thickly on the ground, heaped in mounds alongside the pathway that meanders between trees, providing shelter for small creatures that hibernate during the cold months. Not everything is sleeping. Follow me along a forest path, keeping eyes and ears open and you might just spot deer or wild boar, hear a robin sing with joy or scare a hungry squirrel trying to remember where he buried his hazelnut stash!

Along a Forest Path Mitts are knit from the top down, the lace pattern creating a decorative wavy edge. They are the simplest of handwarmers, keeping your hands and wrists toasty whilst leaving fingers free for gathering the last of autumn’s mushrooms and nuts (assuming the squirrels haven’t stashed the lot!)

Due to gauge differences between working flat and in the round, the length of your finished mitts will depend on your working method. In the round they will measure approx 18cm, whilst knit flat will measure approx 20cm.
Length can be adjusted by working fewer or more pattern rows or ribbing rows if desired but that will affect yardage required

Yarn Requirements
Marina Skua Mendip 4ply (50g/150m) 1 skein or 150m of 4ply yarn

A note on yarn substitution - you really could use pretty much any 4ply yarn that knits to gauge for this project but I would recommend something with a good wool content that blocks well to bring out the lace pattern AND keeps your hands lovely and warm!

25sts x 42rows = 10cm stocking stitch knit in the round, after blocking
25sts x 38 rows = 10cm stocking stitch knit flat, after blocking

Needles
2.75mm (UK 12 / US 2) DPNS or circular knitting needles suitable for working small circumferences in the round/straight needles if preferred for working flat OR size required to get gauge
