Big Wheels Keep on Turning
Introductory offer: This Christmas (24th-26th of December 2023) you can purchase Big Wheels Keep on Turning at a discount of 20% - no coupon code required.
Another year has passed and it was filled with lots of joyful creations for Dibadu yarns. Therefore, it seemed only logical to join our forces for a new advent calendar. So Big Wheels Keep on Turning was born. You can either use the 24 mini balls from the advent calendar or combine three of her color of the month mini skeins like I did in this version.
If you prefer to combine two contrasting yarns (semi solids, gradients etc.) You can use a Dibadu Fadient plus a contrasting color or any other two yarns of your choice. The instructions vary a little bit, therefore you will find two versions of the pattern. One for 24 mini skeins and one for two contrasting colors. I for one used 3 color of the month stories to knit this version (width: 11“/28cm - length: 78“/198cm).
I knitted another version pairing Wollmeise Pure with Schoppel Laceballs (knitting with two Laceball strands at the same time to achieve a longer color gradient - width: 11.5“/29cm - length: 71“/180cm).
Either way it is best to use two circular needles of the same size. 24” is ideal. The swatch is not important. Choose a needle that will give your work a nice drape. Instead of a swatch you can knit Module A. If you manage to finish it with one of your mini skeins, you’re safe. You will need one skein to complete Module A and one skein to complete Modules B + C or D + C. If you are using the advent calendar yarn the instructions will tell you which yarn to use on which module. If you are using mini skein sets you can color in the stencil that you can find at the end of the pattern, before you decide which color to use for which module.
Big Wheels Keep on Turning is a modular knit, but there is no seaming involved as the modules will be joined as you go. You will have to apply short rows. I used the wrap and turn method, which will be explained in photo tutorials included in the pattern. However, you can use any other short row method as well. The joining techniques are also explained in photo tutorials.
If you have any questions or feel like you struggle, send me a personal note on Ravelry or an email and I’ll be happy to help you along the way. You can also join the Funnies Knitters group that Barbara has created for the Dibadu lovers. She was kind enough to devote one thread to Ursa Major Knits designs. So you can ask your questions there as well. We might even do KALs at some point. You are welcome to join us.
