Bloom Beanie
The Bloom Beanie is a fun knit that creates what I hope will become a staple in your cold weather hat collection. I’m especially excited about the stitch pattern that’s used and the opportunity it creates to come up with some awesome colour combinations. It’s also a perfect stash buster, and oh yeah, it’s reversible too!
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
HAT CIRCUMFERENCE: 47 cm / 18.5”
LENGTH OF FABRIC BEFORE FOLDING: 30 cm / 11.75”
MATERIALS
YARN: Estelle Andean DK Heathers (350 m / 382 yards per 100g) held double in colourway 54904 Deep Sea as the main colour
Original Aran Co. Knitting Wool Nm 4/2 (100g) in light blue as the contrast colour
You will use roughly 70g of the main colour and 50g of the contrast colour.
YARN ALTERNATIVES:
Since the yarn listed above is rather hard to find I’ve compiled a list of alternatives that have the appropriate gauge and fiber content and are more readily available:
- Filcolana Pernilla (175 m / 191 yards per 50g) held double
- Juniper Moon Farm Patagonia Organic Merino (350 m / 382 yards per 100 g) held double
- Hobbii Highland Wool (175 m / 191 yards per 50 g) held double
There are several other yarn combinations that will work, just ensure you are getting the appropriate gauge and you like the fabric the yarn and stitch pattern create.
NEEDLES: US 6 / 4.0 mm double pointed needles (DPNs) or 32 inch circular needles if using magic loop
NOTIONS: Stitch markers, tapestry needle.
GAUGE
Cartridge Belt Rib Stitch: 21 sts to 10 cm / 4” on US 6 / 4.0 mm needles, after blocking.
DIRECTIONS
The hat is worked in one piece from the bottom up. First you will work the stitch pattern only in the main colour. Then you will work the stitch pattern alternating one row in the contrast colour (these will be purl rows) and the next row in the main colour (these will be knit rows). Then there is a series of decrease rounds to create the crown shaping. Weave in the ends and you’re done!
