The Boqueria Basket is knit in Nutiden, a yarn I love and which I’ve used in many of my designs to date. This time, though, I’m not using Nutiden to achieve a delicate and airy fabric. Quite the opposite, two or three strands of yarn held together, at a tight gauge create a sturdy but malleable fabric. It will look slouchy and soft when worn, but the special qualities of unspun yarn will make it as hard-wearing as it can be. It is knit in a combination of linen and half-linen stitch, which is fun all around.
CONSTRUCTION
First, a rectangular base is knit in linen stitch. Then, the stitches are picked up around it and knit in the round from the bottom up until reaching the handle opening which is worked with a simple i-cord bind-off and cast-on. The edge is finished with another i-cord trim.
GAUGE
24 sts x 44 rows = 10 x 10 cm 4 x 4” in linen stitch, on 5 mm needles (or larger needles), after blocking.
20 sts x 30 rounds = 10 x 10 cm 4 x 4” in half-linen stitch, on 5 mm needles (or 0.5 mm less than the larger needle), after blocking.
NOTIONS
Blocking tools, darning needle, scrap yarn, stitch counter, stitch ms, and tape measure.
