The Bulla Cowl is worked in the round, beginning with a provisional cast on. The pattern is knit in a tube, and twisted, before grafting together the ends. The pattern combines plain stocking stitch with stripes and stranded colourwork motifs.

The motifs used are inspired by the decorative motifs on a Late Bronze Age Bulla, found at the Bog of Allen, in Ireland’s midlands, which is now displayed in the National Museum of Ireland, Kildare St.

The pattern uses charted instructions for the colourwork motifs, and includes links to video tutorials on provisional cast on and grafting techniques.

Size:
66 cm / 26 inches circumference. 18 cm / 7 inches depth.

Gauge:
26 sts & 34 rows in stocking stitch using smaller needle. 26 sts & 24 rows in stranded colourwork using larger needle. Both worked in the round, and after blocking.

Needles
3.25 mm & 4mm or the sizes you need to achieve gauge, in your preferred style for working in the round. Eg. DPNs, 23 cm / 9 inch circular needle or 100 cm circular needle for magic loop.

Yarn:
Light DK or sport weight yarn in the following quantities:
Colour A 140 m / 153 yds.
Colour B 140 m / 153 yds.
Colour C 110 m / 120 yds.

Samples uses BC Garn Semilla GOTS in the following shades:
Colour A 30 (dark grey), 1 ball.
Colour B 28 (light grey), 1 ball.
Colour C 16 (green-yellow), 1 ball.

Additional Materials:
Crochet hook and 2 - 3 m / 3 yds of scrap yarn, for provisional cast on.
Spare needle gauge size or slightly smaller.
Darning needle for grafting and weaving in ends.
For blocking: pins, towel, flat surface such as towel or foam mats etc.
