ABOUT THE PATTERN
‘Chrysanthemum’ slippers are worked flat sideways using short rows for both shaping and decoration on the toe, and then seamed at the heel and along the sole.
You can add an extra personal touch with basic crochet decorations (see my lovely testers’ projects for ideas!).
The pattern includes regular style instructions for 3 most popular female shoe sizes if you do match gauge, and also a recipe for adapting the pattern for other sizes / gauges.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS
Yarn: heavy DK to aran-weight superwash yarn (180-230m/200-250yds per 100g/3.5 oz) in 2 contrasting colors. If you wear out slippers quickly, I recommend yarns with 15-30% nylon / acrylic for durability.
The sample was knit out of Rico Design ‘Soft Merino Aran’ (100% merino; 100m/110yds per 50g/3.5oz).

Needles: 3.5mm / US 4, or size to get gauge (or size, that gives you a nice dense fabric with your yarn if you are comfortable using the recipe). The rows in the slippers are short, so you can use any style needles: DPNs, short or long straight needles, or circular needles on a ~60cm/24” cable.

Notions: waste yarn, crochet hook, stitch markers, row counter, tape measure, tapestry needle, scissors.

GAUGE

• 18 sts by 18 ridges (36 rows) per 10cm/ 4” square in garter stitch after wet blocking, slightly stretched.
• Make sure to knit a large enough swatch and wet-block it. If you are close to the gauge – adjust your needle size (have too many sts  larger needle and vice versa)

SIZING AND YARDAGE
3 sizes for most popular teen/adult female shoe sizes:
1 (2, 3) or EUR 36-37 (38-39, 40-41), or US 5.5-7 (7.5-9, 9.5-10.5)

If knitting with original gauge, you will need

• MC: 100 (110, 120) m / 110 (120, 130) yds
• CC: (20, 25, 30) m / 25 (30, 35) yds

• Provisional cast-on (using crochet hook & scrap yarn)
• Working in garter stitch flat with chain selvage edges
• Reading charted instructions (optional)
• Kitchener stitch/grafting garter fabric
• Mattress stitch along vertical selvage edge
