Dyeing your own yarn is wonderful and addictive! Using food-safe dyes in your kitchen and coming up with your own colour schemes is fun, easy, and safe. But what to do with all your crazy-coloured little skeins?

This scarf pattern shows off several mini skeins of highly-variegated yarn, arranged in simple intarsia columns. Stockingette and garter-stitch sections vary the pooling effects of the yarn, and the chevron stitch pattern adds zap.

You will need approximately 600 yards of fingering-weight yarn. I made my scarf using six 100-yard skeins of undyed Skeinz Machine Washable Merino 4-ply, dyed with food colouring. Leftover sock yarn would work brilliantly too, in variegated or semi-solid shades.

This scarf can easily be customised by varying the weight of yarn, the number of intarsia columns, and the length.
