If you want to do fair isle knitting on the outside cover of the earmuff, you may design a pattern and do so but it may be sideways depending on the style of earmuff you sew it to. Some earmuffs are behind-the-neck muffs while others go over the top of your head. Be aware of orientation before designing a colorwork pattern.
