Emelyn Mae is a 2-colored crescent shaped shawl worked sideways. You begin on the right tip with an interesting garter-tab cast on with a mock cord edging. You’ll work stripes, garter stitch and a very simple lace pattern as you increase towards the center. The center panel is worked in just one color with a simple cable + lace pattern. From there you’ll decrease for the left side of the shawl. Best of all, the design is all done mostly in garter stitches and the colors change just often enough to keep you from getting bored!

Errata: In the first released version of the pattern- Section 11 Row 4 incorrectly calls for a kfb. The actual stitch is a k2tog. Corrected in 5.30.17 version

About the Name

This pattern was inspired by and named for my eldest niece, Emelyn Mae, my companion for a now annual fiber festival tradition. We select a new festival each year as a way of sampling all of the local events. Eventually we hope to decide on a favorite to visit regularly. In the meantime, we’ve been having loads of fun! In 2016, Emelyn and I visited the Rhode Island Fiber Fest and I purchased a luxurious skein of yarn from Knits4Comfort. Emelyn petted the skein as we walked away from the booth, saying it would make the perfect beach shawl! Indeed she was correct. This pattern was designed to be the perfect, delicate accessory to slip over your shoulder for an evening summer stroll on the beach. It’s soft and beautiful like Emelyn with a bit of cabled, lacy intricacy that I see in Emelyn as she grows ever closer to adulthood.
