The Emma Woodhouse Socks are the fifth in a collection of patterns named after women from Jane Austen novels. I like to design the socks with an eye to what the character might like to knit. Emma Woodhouse may be hasty to make judgements about people, but she had an amazing governess, and I like to think she would be a good knitter. And she’d probably appreciate the fact that you can rip out knitting and do it again when you make a mistake! Emma Woodhouse is my own namesake and despite her character flaws, I have always loved her for the way she learns to be accountable for her actions.

These socks are worked from the cuff down and include three sizes for fingering-weight yarn. The directions are written for magic-loop knitting and include a heel flap and gusset, but feel free to substitute your own needle preference and preferred heel/toe method. You could easily substitute this texture chart into your favorite toe-up sock pattern if that is your preference! But please note that the lace pattern will be flipped over if you do this.

You should be able to knit a pair of these socks for most foot sizes in fingering weight with approx. 100g of yarn.
