Years ago, while researching the fishing industry, I was flabbergasted to discover that several of the commonly caught breeds were allowed to be fished before they were capable of breeding. This seemed astoundingly short-sighted to me (and the situation doesn’t seem to have improved since).

This shawl is a part of the Sustain the Sea collection, and represents the end result of fishing in an unsustainable manner - empty nets and waves. If we can raise awareness of the plight of our oceans I hope this will not come to pass.

Empty Nets is a triangular shawl worked from side to side, that can be made to any size, using any thickness of yarn. The centre is a simple net repeat, with a wave patterned edging, all patterning is worked on the right side only. The bind off edge is ruffled to represent the waves breaking on the shore.

The sample shawl uses 120g of heavy laceweight yarn (Zealana Kiwi Laceweight, 597m/651 yards).

Gauge is not critical, fabric should have a nice soft drape.
