When I originally saw Nancy Bush’s “Knitted Lace of Estonia” I was smitten. The Crown Prince Square Shawl pictured on the cover is stunning. Taking a close look at the beautiful stars in the border I knew I had to do something with that stitch. I removed all the nupps and moved the motifs closer together, then modified it to use it as the central stitch. I found some tiny stars to separate the large stars from the border, and a shawl was born. This is the rectangular version of In the Starlight, a triangular shawl.
Shawl is worked from a long provisional cast on at the top edge toward to lower border. Stitches are picked up from the provisional cast on, and bound off using the knitter’s choice of one of three methods. The pattern comes in three sizes: scarf, small shawl, and large shawl.
Finished size: 12.25 x 67 (22.5 x 67, 26 x 74) inches; 31 x 170 (57 x 170, 66 x 188) cm.
Yarn: 375 (650, 825) yards lace weight yarn.
Beads: 437 (667, 822) count (12 (18, 22) grams) size 8/0 seed beads.
Needles: US 5 (3.75 mm) needles, 1 DPN the same size if you do the applied applied border. The DPN isn’t critical, but makes it easier.
Crochet hooks: size F (3.75 mm) or larger for provisional cast on, and size 13 (.85 mm) or size that fits through the bead hole
Skills: k2tog, ssk, YO, s1-k2tog-psso, s2-k1-p2sso, provisional cast on, applied border (optional).
Other supplies: waste yarn; stitch markers are optional.
Stitch patterns: Charted and written.
Difficulty: Intermediate.
Errata, 2011 March 03: It seems that everyone who has knit this up until now either used the charts, or got confused. The charts are fine, but there were a couple (cough) little issues with the written stitch instructions. If you purchased the pattern through Patternfish, please download the revised version. If you purchased a printed copy of the pattern, please see the errata page.
