Exploits Valley a fun modular hap exploiting the angle formed by the lace chevron. First, three lace panels (in the contrast colour) are knit flat from the bottom up with tapered decreases. Stitches are picked up around each panel and colourwork is knit flat (but you can add steeks and knit the colourwork in the round, if desired). Each panel is joined by working lace flat and joining to the live stitches along each colourwork band. To finish, a knitted-on lace border is worked around the entire hap. Exploits Valley is very much a shlanket that wants to be wrapped around you!

Yarn

Blacker Yarns St. Kilda (100% Boreray/Soay blend; 350 metres / 380 yards per 50 grams) in main colour (MC) Stac Lee (dark undyed): approximately 1220 metres / 1335 yards, and contrast colour (CC) Isle of Dún (pale undyed): approximately 950 metres / 1040 yards. If using sample yarn you will need 4 skeins of MC and 3 skeins of CC. The Blacker Yarns Pure Blue-faced Leicester Laceweight 2-ply is the perfect substitute yarn if the St. Kilda is unavailable.

Gauge

Lace: 22 sts and 36 rows to 10cm / 4” with size A needles after blocking (or needle size required to match gauge).

Fair Isle: 30 sts to 10cm / 4” and 11 rows to 3.2cm / 1.25” with size B needles after blocking (or needle size required to match gauge)

Size

170cm / 67” wide and 110cm / 43.25” deep

Needles and Notions

Due to the modular construction of this shawl, it is important to meet stitch gauge in both lace and Fair Isle patterns. Use needle sizes that give you the correct gauge.

Size A: 3mm (US 2.5) two circular needles at least 80cm / 32” in length and one DPN

Size B: 3.5mm (US 4) circular needle at least 80cm / 32” in length

You will also need: spare needles of size A or smaller to use to place stitches on hold, lace blocking wires (preferably!), stitch markers, removable markers.
