Fables Fingerless Mitts
The Fables Fingerless Mitts begin at the wrist and progress towards the fingers, a section of the hand is worked flat then re-joined to finish. At this point the mitts will look a bit odd, but like most fairy tales & fables things aren’t quite as they seem. Stitches are picked up around the thumb opening and short-rows are worked in-pattern to create the gusset & thumb while adding shaping.
Of all the patterns in the Tales of Childhood Collection, these mitts are the trickiest to make thanks to some of the lesser known stitches. (The Chapter by Chapter Cap is the easiest while the Story Hour Shawl lands somewhere in the middle.) I’ve linked photo tutorials in the pattern’s Stitch Guide to help you out.

Notes:
I’ve provided different gauges for the different stitch patterns. Depending on your knitting style, you may need go up to a US 8 (5.0 mm) for the mosaic section. You will be happier with your fabric if you swatch a bit first for this pattern & learn the technique.
Pattern is both written and charted.
