Fern Wrap
This pattern debuted in October 2020 as part of A Verb for Keeping Warm Pro-verbial Club Year 11. Thank you to A Verb for Keeping Warm for allowing me to be the contributor for October 2020.
I love short rows. I love the way they transform knitted fabric, curving the axis, and allowing for a story to unfold. The Fern Wrap pattern developed from observing the leaves of the fern plant and the way they taper from the spine to the tips of the leaves, as well as from the base to the outer edge of the spine itself. Short rows allowed me to mimic this process. And the resulting curve of the wrap reminds me of fiddleheads.
The Fern Wrap consists of five sections, each generally a shorter repeat of the previous one. The wrap reduces in size from the bottom cast on edge of the shawl to the top bind off and from the center spine to the outer leaf edges.
The pattern uses the wrap and turn method of short rows. The word “turn” in the pattern is shorthand for wrap and turn.
The pattern is written out. There is not a chart.
