Friendship
I designed this for my dear friend Karen. The diamonds at the top are because her friendship is more valuable to me than gem- stones, the hearts are for love, and the semi-circles in the border are the hugs that I send her long distance because she lives 400 miles away, and we rarely see each other.
Shawl is knit from the top center, and worked down and out toward the bottom edge. The border is knit as part of the whole -- it is not knit on afterward.
This is an intermediate lace pattern.
Sizes: The pattern is written for two sizes: small and large. The small model was knit in JaggerSpun Wool-Silk, in Plum, and measures 76 x 36 inches (193 x 91 cm). The large red model was knit in Yarn Place Gentle, in Deep Ruby. Kathryn’s large model was knit in Posh Yarn Cecilia, and measures 106 x 55 inches (269 x 140 cm). If you want a different size finished shawl, you can change it by simply changing needle sizes or knitting the motifs a different number of times than I have indicated.
Gauge: 2.5 inches wide x 2 inches high (6.3 x 5 cm) 2.25 inches wide x 1.75 inches high (5.7 x 4.4 cm) in diamond motif, measured across the width and height of a finished diamond at top edge, blocked.
Skills: Lace knitting, chart reading.
Beads: Size 8/0 seed beads 11g (20g). Beads are optional.
Other supplies: Waste yarn for provisional cast on is required. Lifelines and stitch markers are optional.
Stitch patterns: Charted.
Notes:
Any size crochet hook can be used that provides a chain stitch large enough to easily get the knitting needle through for the provisional cast on.
