I designed these gloves in collaboration with the remarkable South Down Yarns. I was particularly attracted to their ethos and working methods as well as their stunning yarns which have an intrinsic beauty that comes from their use of natural dyes and local sheep herds.

The colours I chose spoke to me of the South Downs of Sussex; both the landscape and the important role played by this area in WWII. Through a chance conversation with Louise, The alchemic genius behind South Down Yarns, I soon came upon the most remarkable women, Lady Gertrude Denman, a doyen of the South Downs who was instrumental in the women’s Suffrage Movement and the Women’s Land Army.

With a nod to those intrepid ladies who rolled up their sleeves at a time when they were most needed and the Lady who enabled them, I present Gertrude…
