This square features a subtle repeated heart design formed using front-post stitches. Perfect for a baby blanket, or a wedding gift too.

A matching plain version of the square (without the heart detail) is also included in the pattern.

The finished squares are 15cm / 6 inches square when made with DK/light worsted weight yarn and a 4.5mm hook. You can make them the size of your choice by using a lighter/heavier yarn and appropriate hook.

Both the Heart Square and the Plain Square have sides 24sts long.

I designed this square with collaborative charity projects in mind, so it contains no large holes/loops and requires only a single colour of yarn. The design also allows for the size of the square to be adjusted in the final round, which helps when contributing fixed-size squares to a shared project.

This pattern is for squares which can be combined in any way you like to make a variety of projects including blankets, rugs, runner and wraps - it is not a pattern for a finished article.

I have developed this style because I find I like to see a lot of detail the first time I work a pattern, but if I then work the same piece again, I don’t need the pictures, etc, and indeed they can get in the way when I just want a quick reminder of what I’m doing. The PDF is also structured so that the succinct version, with an area for your own notes, is on a single page, making it easy to just take one sheet of paper with you if you have printed it out for quick reference on the move.
