However old we are, whether married or single, we all remain hopeful that we will find love, our love will last and that we will be together forever. Created by the Gods and given a gift from each of them, Pandora was the first woman on Earth and created as a punishment to mankind. Pandora, whose name means ‘the one who has all gifts’, was given a jar (pithos) and told that it contained special gifts but she was never to open it. Wanting humanity to suffer so they would know not to disobey the Gods, Zeus knew that though she might try, Pandora would not be able to contain her curiosity. She opened the jar releasing illness, plague, hardship and misery. Panicking and scared, Pandora quickly closed the jar keeping Hope within.

The myth of Pandora’s jar/box tells us of the weakness of humans, how our curiosity has consequences, not just for the individual but for all mankind. However, it also tells us that hope will always remain, including hope that we can pause, think and process the possibilities of those consequences before we act. Hope means that we have the opportunity to always do the right thing.

Hope Remains is a delicate, lacy and beaded, top-down, crescent shaped shawl designed to be knit in a laceweight yarn (800m/100g) and is inspired the tale of Pandora.

 
REQUIREMENTS
Size Options: As written – 82” (210cm) wide, 20” (51cm) deep, after blocking, though the shawl is easily enlarged or reduced. Measurements taken using Fyberspates Gleem Lace. Note that measurements will differ depending on yarn, tension, blocking etc and these are therefore given as a guide only.
Yarn: One Skein (800m/100g) of Laceweight yarn with some silk content and that will hold a block well. Suggested yarns are Fyberspates Gleem Lace, Skein Queen Lustrous Lace, DyeDianaDye FlaxenSilk Lace, Lichtfaden Pure Silk Lace (two 50g skeins required), Posh Yarns Sylvia, Gretchen, Tilda Lace and Greta and the Fibers Silk me lace.
Circular Needles: 3.25mm (US 3), 3.5mm (US4), 3.75mm (US5) and 4.5mm (US 7) about 1m in length or needles to create a pleasing fabric – your fabric should not be too dense and should have good drape.
You will also need: stitch markers, just under 1300 size 6 Miyuki or Toho seed beads (as written), needle (for weaving in ends), blocking pins and mats, cro-tat needle or small crochet hook for applying beads as all beads are applied to the stitch as you knit. Do not string beads onto the yarn prior to working, all beads are applied using a crochet hook or cro-tat needle.
Gauge: Gauge is not overly important as this is a shawl. It is better to knit a swatch to ensure that you are happy with your tension and the drape of your fabric remembering that a looser gauge will result in additional yardage requirements. However, the gauge achieved was 20 sts to 4” after blocking – measurement taken over stocking stitch using 3.75mm (US 5) needles.

The pattern is both fully written and charted with bead placement clearly indicated throughout. You will find it useful to print your pattern on a colour printer, however, coloured pencils could be used to highlight aspects of the pattern and bead placement.
