Horse Head Applique
If you want to create a horse-themed jumper (or your granddaughter is begging you for one) but you don’t know how to knit jumpers, here is the solution. Simply knit the fun bit and then sew it onto a shop-bought jumper. You could also stitch it to a cushion, a blanket, your living-room curtains… or anything else you can think of!
This pattern uses intermediate knitting skills. Ideally, you’ll be familiar with colour-work such as intarsia, and not be put off by having to turn in the middle of the row. However, the pattern is designed so that it will hold together without any special colour techniques, and the stitches required are fairly straightforward. There are nine separate pieces to knit and assemble, so you will need a little bit of patience when sewing it together at the end.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a pattern for the applique only, not for a jumper!
Size: 19cm tall and 19cm across
Difficulty: Intermediate.
Stitches used: kfb, k2tog, p2tog, sl1k, sl1p, sl1k1psso, sl1p1psso, sl1k2togpsso, sl1p2togpsso
You will need:
• Wool in black, brown, dark brown, light brown, grey, cream and yellow, no more than 20g each. I used Double Knit (8-6 ply, “light worsted”.) Tension: 10cm x 10cm square is 24 stitches across and 32 rows.
• Knitting needles. I used 3.0mm.
• Tapestry needle. It will help if it has a sharp point, or you’ll find it difficult to sew through the felt.
• Small amount of wadding or stuffing
• Large piece of brown felt for backing
• Large piece of scrap cardboard
• Clothes-pegs
