A realistic version of an iris flower, made in Tunisian crochet. While the pattern is for one-size only, using larger hooks will produce a larger flower. The smallest hook (0.4mm) produces a flower (including full flowerhead and stem) of c.4cm (1.75in) wide and 7cm (2.75in) tall. Using a 0.75mm hook gives a flower that is c.6cm (2.25in) wide and 10cm (4in) tall (see photos).

The base stitch is Tunisian Simple Stitch. The pattern also contains short rows and colour-work. It is aimed at the intermediate crocheters but it includes several in-depth photo tutorials covering all elements of construction that a geared towards the advanced beginner. The pattern assumes that you have a basic understanding of standard crochet techniques (such as chaining, single crochets and slip stitches only).

No specialist equipment is necessary for making this flower. There are only a maximum of 10 stitches on the hook at once and I use a standard handled hook without issue. In addition to the thread and hook, you will need about 1.5m (1.6yd) 32ga (0.2mm) jewellery wire and some glue (I used pritt stick). With regard to thread, I used DMC machine embroidery thread no.50. This is a spooled equivalent of 1 strand of embroidery floss. You can also used standard sewing cotton or, if using a larger hook, any yarn appropriate for the hook size. A minimum of 4 colours of thread are required. These will make numerous flowers though.

With regard to the tutorials, these are extremely large and designed for electronic copy use with interactive contents pages referring to the pattern rows. You can obviously print them if you wish but be warned that they run to about 200 pages so please check them before you print. The actual pattern is 33 pages.
