For the desperate romantic, mist is the weather equivalent of Christmas or a birthday party. It evokes the same kind of emotion and intensity.
Mist is caused by small water droplets suspended in the air. In technical terms, I am told, it is called dispersion. It seems very appropriate to me. - this is an ailment to which hopeless the romantic’s train of thought is naturally inclined.
As a meteorological phenomenon, it has the added advantage of preventing one from getting too lost in thought, an ailment to which hopeless romantics are ALSO naturally inclined. In the mist, one is more concerned with not really getting lost.
Mist is linked to some of my favorite literary moments. Good novels rely on mist to evoke mystery, romance, fear, and freedom. Think of it: mist is the only companion to
Leonard Bast’s night walk in Howard’s End, and to Cassandra at the end of I Capture the Castle. I wanted to create a garment that felt like the feeling of walking in woodland in the mist - much like my favorite books do. I imagined myself walking vigorously, wrapped in this huge warm shawl, concentrating on every single footstep, excited by the perspective of spotting a red deer behind some Gorse bushes.
This shawl is, as per usual, named after an island. I imagined the perfect setting for my dream, the isle of Islay. I’ve read that it smells of smoke, because of the wood-burning at the malt whiskey distilleries. I am happier to believe the smell of white thick smoke comes from the mist itself. What else would it smell of, otherwise?
This shawl is a classic triangular shape shawl with added umph at the wings. It is worked in no time and the result is a lovely, huge, shawl to embrace the colder days ahead.

Yarn
550 m of Vams PT3 by Rauma Garn (100% wool) 50 gr/83.
Sample in 03 GREY.
Or equal amounts of bulky weight yarn.
This is a large shawl. Avoid using heavy-weight yarns for this project. Instead, opt for blown, woollen-spun airy chunky yarns.
Also, a thread of mohair and a thread of worsted/aran will give you similar results.
Needles
6 mm / US 10 circular needles with a cable length of at least 100 cm /40”
Gauge
14 sts X 18 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4” in stockinette stitch after blocking
Gauge is not crucial for this project. You can achieve a similar beautiful result using a different gauge and sport or Dk weight yarn.
Notions
Blocking tools, darning needle, removable stitch markers, and tape measure.
