Knothead

This double-thick hat has a pretty decorative ‘knot’ at the color changes. Starting with a provisional cast-on, it is worked in both directions and then worn with one side inside the other.
Skills required
Provisional cast-on
Decreasing
Sizes and approximate yardage
Small – 15 inches around unstretched/20 inches around stretched – 380 yards
Medium – 16.7 inches around unstretched/22 inches around stretched – 420 yards
Large – 18.3 inches around unstretched/24 inches around stretched – 460 yards
Materials
Fingering-weight yarn in as many colors as you want – you may need a bit more yardage if you use lots of small amounts
US 2/2.75 mm needles or size needed to obtain gauge in your preferred configuration for working small circumferences
Stitch marker
Measuring tape
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
The Turkish cast-on as a provisional cast-on works well for this. Be sure to find an explanation as a cast-on for knitting in both directions rather than for a toe-up sock. (There is one here.)
Because of the double thickness this hat ‘wears’ a bit more snugly than other hats.
