Lace for the Admiral
This semi-circle shawl is based on the traditional Shetland hap, a practical shawl worn for warmth. It is worked outwards from the centre top edge using Pi shawl shaping. A traditional Shetland stitch pattern forms a contrast coloured border before a knitted-on edging finishes off the shawl. Make it using undyed wool for a traditional look, or brightly coloured contrasting yarns for a fun and modern appearance!
After blocking, the finished shawl measures 60” (150cm) along the top edge, and 30” (75cm) deep, when worked to pattern tension of 26 stitches and 34 rows to 4”/10cm of stocking stitch.
You will need:
600 yds (548m) fingering weight yarn in main colour A (stocking stitch semi-circle)
600 yds (548m) fingering weight yarn in contrast colour B (border and edging)
3.5mm (US4) needles, long enough to accommodate over 500 sts
2 stitch markers
Darning needle (for weaving in ends)
You need to be able to: work from written instructions (the pattern is written only, no charts), work common increases and decreases
