Land of Myth is a dramatic, beaded, triangular shawl that has bands of garter stitch interspersed with panels of floral lace. The panels start with a single repeat of motifs and progress into larger panels as the shawl grows.
Land of Myth can be made with almost any fingering weight yarn. The original was worked in a Merino Single for a cosy wrap and the shawl shown right was worked in a Silk/Yak yarn. What about using a linen/silk blend for a summer shawl, a SeaSilk or Pure Silk for a luxurious version, a mohair/silk blend would make for a luxurious cover-up and if you fancy working in a laceweight and a kidsilk version would be like wearing a cloud. Wrap yourself in mystery, transport yourself through time, and dream of magic!
REQUIREMENTS
Size Options: As written 71” (180cm) wide, 30.5” (78cm) deep before blocking and 83” (210cm) wide, 39” (99cm) deep after. Measurements taken using Long Grass Merino Singles. Note that measurements will differ depending on yarn, tension, blocking etc and these are therefore given as a guide only.
Yarn: Three skeins of Life in the Long Grass Merino Singles (366m/100g) or almost any fingering weight yarn of around 366m to 500m/100g would be suitable. Other yarns that are particularly suitable include Skein Queen Wriggle Fingering, Skein Queen Selkino, Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light, Eden Cottage Yarns Carlisle Fingering, Hedgehog Fibres Skinny Singles, DyeforYarn Merino Silk Fingering, Miss Babs Damask, Miss Babs Holston or The Fibre Co Meadow for something lighter.
Circular Needles: 3.75mm (US5) and 4.5mm (US 7) about 1m to 1.5m in length or needles to create a pleasing fabric – your fabric should not be too dense and should have good drape.
You will also need: just under 500 Miyuki or Toho size 6 seed beads or Miyuki size 5 triangular beads, 1mm crotat hook or 0.75mm crochet hook, stitch markers (about 80), needle (for weaving in ends), blocking pins and mats.
Gauge: Gauge is not overly important as this is a shawl. However, it is better to knit a swatch to ensure that you are happy with your tension and the drape of your fabric remembering that a looser gauge will result in additional yardage requirements. The gauge achieved was 23 sts to 4” before blocking and 19 sts to 4” after – measurements taken over garter stitch using 3.75mm (US 5) needles.
You will find it useful to print your pattern on a colour printer or colour your beads in coloured pencils.
A looser gauge will result in additional yardage requirements.
The pattern is both fully written and charted.
If you like my designs please join us in the Boo Group where you will find a place to discuss my patterns, show off your knitting and hear about KALs and MKALs.
Patterns already set up by KnitCompanion can be purchased, in the KnitCompanion Store, for knitters who like to use KnitCompanion, but prefer to have their charts already set up.
