Leyendecker
This luxuriously heavy sweater is everything one could want to ward off a winter chill. It features a ribbed body and sleeves with a voluminous turtleneck. Knitted in Valley Yarns Superwash Bulky it is both very warm, very soft and a very quick knit. It utilizes traditional Gansey construction, with body knitted top up and the sleeves knitted from top down and is worked entirely in 1X1 ribbing.
This sweater was inspired by illustrator J.C. Leyendecker. A contemporary of Norman Rockwell, Leyendecker was a popular illustrator. One of his many covers of the Saturday Evening Post was “The Harvard Pole Vaulter” from June 29, 1907 which shows a tall, athletic man in a ribbed turtleneck sweater. More research reveals that his illustrations featured similar sweaters no less than 8 additional times, and with good reason! The Leyendecker sweater is a definite must for any wardrobe.
