Old Maiden Aunt’s Shetland lace weight creates an amazingly crisp but woolly fabric. It’s perfect for true knitted lace, with patterning on right side and wrong side rows, which needs to hold a firm block to show its full potential. Don’t worry if your lace looks like a crumpled heap before blocking, that’s normal!

The shawl features traditional Shetland lace patterns combined in a clean, simple way with a garter stitch centre. The edging is worked first as a long strip and stitches are picked up from the centre. A looped yarn over selvedge makes this is a simple process. The centre is shaped with decreases until only a few stitches are left, these are grafted together for a neat finish.
