Mangga Shawlette
The Mangga Shawlette was originally designed for Radicle Threads Magazine’s 1st Anniversary Community Box.
When I learned that the Community colorway was inspired by a photo of mango trees, I thought of how my mom slices up mangga (Kapampangan for “mango”). With just a few skillful cuts, the large seed is removed, leaving two fleshy halves that are crosscut while still in the skin. When the halves are inverted, a beautiful grid of mango cubes pop up, ready to eat.
This quick one-skein project is made of two triangular pieces joined together with a visible seam. Most of the shawl is done in a block stitch — a reference to those delicious cubes of mango. At the center of the shawl, double crochet stitches form the “seed.”
