After trying and failing to design another project, I took a deep breath and kept crocheting. I let my yarn tell me what it wanted to become. Gauge: 16 sts by 8 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in Double Crochet.

Hook: 5.5 mm, or size needed to obtain gauge.

Finished Size: 50 inches wide, 26 inches deep.
