Crochet Vegetable Pattern
Like all my fruit and vegetables, this onion is designed to be as realistic as possible. It is not just spherical but subtly shaped, and has a ragged top for a naturalistic look.
These onions would make a fantastic kitchen decoration if you hang them in a bunch or as if plaited together, the way real onions are hung! They also make great toys for a play kitchen or veg garden!
This is a quick pattern to work, using only basic stitches and very little finishing. There is no back or front to the finished onion, and no visible seam – it looks great from all angles.
For an onion approximately 7cm or 2¾“ in diameter you will need:
-
double-knitting (DK, light worsted weight, Category 3) yarn in approximately the following quantities: Main colour: 28m (31yds) Root colour: 1.5m (60”)
-
a 3.5mm (E-4) crochet hook
-
a stuffing material (details are provided in the pattern)
-
a blunt yarn needle
-
a ruler or tape measure
-
sharp scissors
And of course you can easily work a larger or smaller onion by using heavier or lighter yarn and varying your hook accordingly!
Discounts apply when you buy three of my vegetable patterns together! See my Vegetables Bundle for details.
This pattern is available in both UK and US crochet terminology. Both files will be available for you on purchase and you can choose whichever you prefer to use.
Important features of my crochet patterns:
My crochet patterns include BOTH a detailed ‘tutorial-style’ set of instructions with colour photos, AND a succinct unillustrated pattern using standard crochet conventions.
I have developed this style because I find I like to see a lot of detail the first time I work a pattern, but if I then work the same piece again, I don’t need the pictures, etc, and indeed they can get in the way when I just want a quick reminder of what I’m doing. The PDF is also structured so that the succinct version, with an area for your own notes, is on a single page, making it easy to just take one sheet of paper with you if you have printed it out for quick reference on the move.
This pattern comes with my full support! If you have any difficulties, please contact me! Rest assured I am a real person and I’d love to hear from you. And of course please shae pictures of your finished vegetables! :-)
Please see my other patterns for more fruit and vegetables. discounts are available if you purchase more than two patterns.
