Oscillating Almond Shawl
This multicolor almond shaped wrap is worked from the center out in a garter ridge texture. The shape similar to a pointy oval, I choose to wear and style it like a crescent-shaped shawl but it can be worn as a scarf or a shawl depending on the finished size. Because my sample is knit in thin yarn, it often gets used as a scarf, fitting nicely under my spring coat without too much bulk. In the time between finishing this project and posting the pattern, it is one of my most worn pieces of knitting, largely because I enjoy the colors, but also because of the unusual shape and distinctive beaded picot bind off. This is the first time I have tried knitting with beads, and it has proven to be an easy and useful technique to pick up. Two different methods to work a beaded bind off can be found on my YouTube channel, specifically tailored to fit the bind off of this shawl. The first
uses pre strung beads, and the second shows how to add beads as you bind off.
In order to make a slightly larger shawl, I worked the center in 2 colors of scrap yarn with a single stripe in a pop color where the yarns transition. The addition of these two Mini screen size scraps gives the peace a little bit of Interest, allows for color experimentation, and makes it a more appropriate size for my height. In a simpler shawl, you could 2 colors only and leave out the change, or change yarn colors more often for a bull’s-eye effect. Full notes on yarn usage and color are below. My last recommendation on color is the adding one gradient or self-striping yarn to this project will make it much more interesting as the stripes interact and the shawl grows out from the center.
