Paper Lanterns was originally released exclusively to 2014 Blue Moon Fiber Arts Rockin’ Sock Club members as the January 2014 “not-sock” pattern. This newly formatted version of Paper Lanterns was released on Ravelry on June 1, 2015.

The Rockin’ Sock Club designer inspiration board for that month focused on the Chinese New Year. Images of strings of paper lanterns immediately caught my eye and inspired the design of this shawlette. The shawl is completely reversible with lots of garter stitch and an edging that incorporates eyelet holes and wrapped-and-dropped stitches to create a string of round lantern shapes.

This is a quick and fun knit that is perfect to use with any high-contrast, seriously variegated skein of sock yarn, as well as a solid or lightly variegated one.
