Perfectly Plain Skull Cap
My son wanted a hat. Perfectly plain. No stranded knitting. I rarely knit anything plain. But I could do it. For him. Then he called me. He loves to fish. Could he have a small fish border at the edge? YAY!!!. Subdued. All greys. With my beloved fish skeletons.
You can knit this “perfectly plain” leaving out the fishies on the edge and increasing the MC by the amount of the CC. It has a nice fit with a tiny column of rib for a little textural interest. In three sizes: SM (small), MD (medium) & LG (large - shown in photo)
If a slightly larger hat is desired, go up 1 needle size and switch to regular worsted weight, such as Cascade 220.
Materials:
MC 120 (135, 150) yds / 110 (123, 137) m light worsted in dark grey
Indie String Cannonball used in prototype, but is no longer made
Cascade 220 Merino Superwash will work nicely
CC 18 (19, 20) yds / 16.5 (17.5, 18) m light worsted in light grey.
US Size 6 / 4 mm (or size to obtain gauge) 16 in circular needles
US Size 5 / 3.75 mm (or one size smaller than needle above) 16 inch circular needles
Same size DP’s as above larger needles for top decreases
Stitch Marker, Sharp Darning Needle
Gauge:
22 sts x 33 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in st st on larger needles, unblocked.
Finished Length: 8 (8.25, 8.5) in / 20.5 (21, 21.5) cm
Finished Circumference: 16.5 (18.25, 20) in / 42 (46.5, 51) cm
