Pointed Moss Scarf
I whipped this up for my husband as a birthday prezzie – I wanted a simple, masculine pattern with a texture that would highlight the subtle colors of this yarn. The moss (aka seed) stitch lies flat, is reversible, and opens up the fabric to create a lovely drape. It’s a simple alternation of Ks and Ps – the cloth “reads” K1, P1, K1, P1 both horizontally and vertically. I added a slip-stitch edge for a clean, finished line. It’s the “OMG I Must Love You” scarf because not only did I give up my luscious Camelspin, but I worked 6 trillion moss stitches on microscopic needles. Having seen his face afterwards, though, it was totally worth it. Next… the “OMG I Must REALLY Love You Kilt Hose.”
Finished size of sample: 6’4” x 5” with Handmaiden Camelspin (almost exactly 1 skein, 328.0 yards / 299.9m) on size 2.5 needles, 33st wide.
Gauge: Mine turned out to be 6.6st/in. Obviously gauge is not super-important in a scarf. If you are doing Start A, you don’t even need to swatch to get the perfect width. This pattern will work just as well in a worsted or even bulky weight, just use large enough needles so that the fabric drapes instead of being stiff.
Yes, there are two ways to start this project!
A: For those who are unable or unwilling to swatch, and those who don’t care if the two ends don’t match exactly. Hint: if this is a gift for a non-knitter they will most likely not notice the difference between the ends.
B: For those who are comfortable with provisional cast-ons (or want to learn) and perfectionists.
