Red Riding Coat
A timeless classic: the double-breasted A-line pea-coat with a nice fitted hood and cute details like a back flounce and textured front bands.
Cozy and sweet!
~~~
Suitable for an advanced beginner knitter, the coat is knit from the top down with just one seam at the top of the hood (a seamless hood solution is suggested). The body is worked flat, the sleeves are worked in the round. Stitches are picked up along each side edge and hood to work the textured band in one piece.
Skills Required: long-tail cast-on, knitting, purling, knitting in the round, increasing, decreasing, knitting on dpns, picking up stitches, yarn over.
To fit chest sizes 16 (17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 23) inches or 40.5 (43, 46, 48, 51, 56, 58) cm.
Finished garment has chest circumferences of 20 (21.5, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26) inches or 50 (54.5, 56, 58.5, 60, 63, 66) cm.
Yarn:
2.5 (2.5, 3, 3.5, 3.5, 4, 4) skeins of Cascade 128 Superwash (100% merino; 128yd/117m per 100g/3.53oz skein) or approximately 300 (325, 375, 450, 460, 470, 490) yards or 275 (300, 340, 410, 420, 430, 450) m of similar chunky or heavy worsted weight yarn (e.g. Knitpicks Swish Bulky, Cascade Ecological Wool / Eco+, Lana Grossa Superbingo etc…)
Needles:
US 10 / 6mm circular needles or size needed to get stockinette gauge.
US 10 / 6mm double-pointed needles (for sleeves), or size needed to get stockinette stitch gauge.
For the 2T-3T and 3T-4T sizes, I recommend using circular needles at least 40-inch (100cm) long to accommodate all the stitches when working front band.
Notions:
4 stitch markers
tapestry needle
2 stitch holders or scrap yarn
4 (4, 4, 4, 4, 6, 6) 3/4-inch (2 cm) diameter buttons
Gauge:
14 sts x 20 rows = 4 inches or 10 cm in stockinette stitch
