This collection of shawls, Teachers With Class, was designed to give thanks to three teachers from my youth ~ my high school french instructor, my piano teacher and my violin teacher. In addition to the substantial difference teachers make in their students’ lives, I wish to thank each of them for some seemingly small things that had long lasting influence on me.

Rosegate
This design is for my childhood piano teacher. Never married, she devoted her life to music, having patented her own method during the 1940s for teaching piano to pre-schoolers. She placed more emphasis on the entertainment value of a musical skill than on technique. At a young age, I was required to have 10 pieces memorized at any given time, thus being prepared to play if asked or just to play for enjoyment. This seemed like a meaningless chore at the time, but proved valuable later when I was playing regularly in public, and it developed a good habit of memorization. The piano is part of my identity, and I thank her for focusing on the right thing for me ~ just the ability to play for myself.

Rosegate is designed to have a vintage 1940s look. A sister shawl to my Piste design, this asymmetrical triangle shawl is knitted sideways from the tip and features a lacy pattern with a simple border. You can make the shawl any size, and work either from charts or the full written instructions. Use any yarn weight to aran, just be sure to adjust your yarn requirements accordingly.
